Leesburg Elementary School History:

Leesburg Elementary opened its doors in the Fall of 1980 and has approximately 550 children. The school contains twenty-eight regular sized classrooms.   A cottage was added to the school to provide space for the Head Start program.

On September 23, 2005, U.S. Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings announced that Leesburg Elementary School was one of 295 schools in the United States to be named a No Child Left Behind Blue Ribbon School for 2005. Blue Ribbon schools are recognized for providing effective instruction and opportunities for every child to learn and achieve.

In 2007 – 2008, LES was recognized for student achievement. The school was honored by the Virginia Board of Education as a “Title I Distinguished School” for maintaining full state accreditation under the commonwealth’s Standards of Learning program for two consecutive years, meeting federal benchmarks in reading and mathematics and having average test scores in both subjects at the 60th percentile or higher. 118 Virginia schools received this designation.
